helsinki, the capital of finland, is currently living through what is known as its ”second wave of demolition”. the shortening lifespan of the built environment reveals something about our culture: repairing and reusing what already exists continues to lose ground to economic interests.
tetris focuses on architecture in helsinki from the 1980s and 1990s, a building stock that has received little formal protection. these buildings and areas do not always meet current aesthetic or functional ideals, and their cultural-historical value tends to be underestimated as a result. yet for many helsinki residents who grew up during that era, particularly in the suburbs, these buildings form an essential part of everyday memory and urban identity. the project sets out to document this disappearing environment before it vanishes or is transformed beyond recognition.
